BGA Chair Professor Andrew Ridley introducing the Fleming Award Event
The judging panel was Giulia Viggiani (head judge) of Cambridge University, Natalie Wride of Mott MacDonald and Pedro Ferreira of University College London.
During judging there was a short presentation by the winner of the 55th Cooling Prize, Thomas Riccio of the University of Dundee on Pile installation effects and plugging in soft rock.
In their summing up, the judges said that they believe that all three projects are winners. All presentation were excellent and illustrated challenging projects which required significant team efforts to be completed on time and on budget.
The Dyfi bridge project is commended for its significant outcomes in terms of resilience and positive impact on the lives of local communities.
2 Finsbury Avenue is a great example of a challenging geotechnical project in a very constrained site, in which state of the art finite element analysis and monitoring were adopted to optimise construction.
Overall, the project that stood out for the way it addressed the very significant geotechnical challenges associated with the presence of very soft alluvium and consequently large deformations using different soil reinforcement techniques to control settlement, was the Dunkettle Interchange Upgrade Scheme.
