The BGA is pleased to announce that Professor David Toll has taken over as BGA Chair, with Dr Andrew Ridley appointed as Vice Chair.

The BGA is grateful to the outgoing Chair, Professor Kelvin Higgins, for his leadership of the BGA during a challenging time when our activities were first affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic.

David Toll

David Toll is Professor of Engineering and Co-Director of the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience at Durham University. He is Chair of the ISSMGE’s Technical Committee TC106 on Unsaturated Soil and was the inaugural Chair of Joint Technical Committee JTC2 of FedIGS on Geo-Engineering Data. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and has been Chair of both ICE North East and the Northern Geotechnical Group. He is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. He has been carrying out research into climate resilience of infrastructure and information technology applied to civil engineering for over 30 years and has published over 200 papers and 12 books. He has held Visiting Professor & Research Fellow posts at Tongji University, China, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, University of Sydney, University of Western Australia and University of Newcastle, Australia. He was the founding editor of the journal, Geotechnical & Geological Engineering and has been a member of the Editorial Boards for Géotechnique and Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology.

Andrew Ridley

Andrew Ridley is the Managing Director and owner of Geotechnical Observations Ltd. He has a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Nottingham and has worked in the geotechnical sector for 37 years. He is the UK representative on ISO/TC182/WG2, which is drafting International Standards for geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring and is Chair of ISSMGE TC220 on Field Monitoring in Geomechanics. He has also served on the Editorial Panel of Geotechnical Engineering (the proceedings of the ICE) and the Editorial Panel of Géotechnique for the 2011 Symposium in Print on Partial Saturation in Compacted Soils. In 2016 he was awarded the John Mitchell Medal by the Institution of Civil Engineers in recognition of his contributions to geotechnical engineering.
