The Fleming Award competition is held at an evening meeting of the BGA each December, with entries being invited during the autumn of each year. The award recognises excellence in the practical application of geotechnics in a project or a part of a project, and is awarded to project teams who have worked on geotechnical projects that have been substantially completed within the two years prior to the award date of December. Each Team is expected to comprise between 3 and 6 people, at least one of whom must be a member of the BGA.
Submitting teams typically include representatives from Clients, Main Contractors, Consulting Engineers, Specialist Contractors and so on. The award is presented to the Project Team which most demonstrates excellence in geotechnical design & construction. There is an emphasis on teamwork across the different disciplines involved in the project, innovation is also a strong consideration.
A list of previous winners and finalists can be viewed here.
The final of the competition will be held as an on-line event:
The judges will be selected from members of the BGA Executive Committee, previous winner(s) and industry leaders.

Meeting the Climate Change Challenge to Transportation Infrastructure Geotechnical Assets
The UK has a vast strategic transportation infrastructure network that is supported by, or runs through, geotechnical assets (earthworks). The strategic road network in England comprises nearly 50,000 such assets, and the rail network in Great Britain has nearly 200,000. Whilst these assets vary considerably in age and performance, they are all exposed to our fickle maritime climate: the key driver for their deterioration and increasingly, their failure. While the management of these assets is challenging at the best of times, due to the complex geology of the UK and variable standards of asset construction, the changing climate presents a further challenge for asset owners to address. This presentation will outline the scale of this challenge, and describe how two major geotechnical asset owners are rising to face it.
Dr Christopher Power is a Technical Director in the Civils Asset Management Team of Mott MacDonald. He is an Engineering Geologist with over 20 years of experience, much of it working with major transportation infrastructure owners in the UK. He has been involved in the development and support of the Highways England Geotechnical Data Management System since its inception, and has assisted both Highways England, Network Rail and other asset owners in the development of their geotechnical asset management processes.
