Professor Byron Byrne, University of Oxford

Byron  is Professor of Engineering Science and Ørsted / Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Advanced Geotechnical Design at the University of Oxford. He leads on research into the geotechnical engineering for offshore wind and other renewable energy structures. He was Principal Investigator for the Carbon Trust / Ørsted / Industry funded PISA project, which won the BGA’s Fleming Award for 2017, delivering new design methods for large diameter offshore wind turbine monopiles. He leads the Oxford–Ørsted Framework research project on cyclic loading for offshore wind monopiles, and is Co-Investigator on the EPSRC / Industry funded ALPACA Project exploring piles in chalk.

Steve Hadley, Central Piling and Vice-Chair of the FPS

Steve Hadley is Managing Director of Central Piling and will be Chair of the Federation of Piling Specialists from April 2020. Steve first fell in love with Ground Engineering during his dissertation at Loughborough University. Post-graduation, Steve worked at Rock and Alluvium, gaining Chartered Status and producing research papers on displacement piling along the way. In 2006 Steve took over at Central Piling, shortly after assuming majority ownership and set about revitalising them. He was a co-author of the latest revision of the ICE SPERW. Steve is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is passionate about improving diversity, health and welfare in Construction.

Professor Lidija Zdravkovic, Imperial College London

Lidija Zdravkovic is Professor of Computational Gemechanics and Head of the Geotechnics Section at Imperial College London. She has led and managed several research projects in collaboration with industry and other academic groups, focusing on the development and application of numerical methods in geotechnical design and providing solutions to a wide range of geotechnical problems, including infrastructure resilience, renewable energy, nuclear waste disposal and offshore geotechnics. Lidija has authored and co-authored over 200 technical publications and received prizes from the ICE and BGA, including the Telford Medal and the BGA Medal on three occasions. She is active in the profession, advising on recent projects involving Heathrow Terminal 5 development, Crossrail excavations, and embankments and cut slopes on the high speed rail route in the UK.

Rapporteur
